PRC gets more bang for the buck without Shem Creek deal

When the PRC Commission met with Councilmen yesterday, apparently they’d already made up their mind – they’re not interested in using their (our) $3 million of its half-cent sales tax funds for the Shem Creek property.
From the PRC’s point of view, they think they can do much better with the funds by purchasing property way up in Awendaw and McClellanville.
To be honest, you can’t really blame them. Like any business, money is the bottom-line, and if you can make more one way than another, then the choice is usually pretty obvious which way to go. With Mt. Pleasant proper still moving northward, the land purchase by PRC was obviously a good investment for them, it just stinks for us here wondering what’s going to happen with the Shem Creek property.
“We want to get the most bang for the buck. If ranked against other available properties, the Shem Creek acreage would be at the bottom of the list of commission priorities. – Commission member Mike Surles.
The only problem is, none of the property they buy way up 17 is going to benefit anybody here in Mt. Pleasant.
I used to live on Doar Rd. in Awendaw for a spell, and believe me, it’s a hike from here. After all, how many of you have driven up 17 to see the Birds of Prey exhibit? No, I don’t see many people spending the time and gas to travel 17N just to checkout whatever gets developed on PRC’s new properties, so it feels like a real loss here in Mt. Pleasant.
