The Gullah Heritage Celebration 2009 ends tomorrow

If you haven’t been out to the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site on Long Point Rd. here in Mt. Pleasant for the Gullah Heritage Celebration, tomorrow is the last day for this year’s event.

This event celebrates the Gullah people of the Lowcountry, who have preserved a culture rich in African elements. Gullah is a distinct culture and language that developed on coastal plantations where enslaved Africans and African-Americans were the vast majority. Gullah people made significant contributions not only to the Lowcountry plantation system, but also to overall American culture.

For those that have driven past it a million times without stopping in to check it out, the park interprets Charles Pinckney’s contributions to the creation of the United States Constitution, the development of the United States from colonies to a nation and life on Lowcountry plantations during his era.

Features include a circa 1828 farmhouse as the museum and visitor center and a 1/2-mile interpretive walking trail. The park is open daily from 9:00-5:00 except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. There is no entrance fee.

All events are free. For more information please call the park at (843) 881-5516.
