Sullivan’s Island Most Contaminated Beach Water In Charleston - S.C. 6th Worst Nationwide

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 6:12 am

*Update: Environmental group admits errors in beach report, moving SC from 6th down 10 spots to the 16th state with the most contaminated beaches, still nothing for us to be proud of.

Sources of SC beach contaminationThe latest findings from the Natural Resources Defense Council are not a welcome sight for us here in SC. DHEC has even accused the NRDC of using incomplete data in their findings, especially poignant now that SC’s Tourism Dept. has been catching a lot of flack over their recent overseas ad campaign.

Charleston’s Angel Oak Tree, 1,500 Years Of Beauty

Monday 21 July 2008 @ 3:59 pm

The next time you go across the bridge and down the road, be sure to stop by and see the Angel Oak Tree on Johns Island, especially before they screw everything up with the rumored highway expansion - something that ties right back into Charleston’s urban growth dilemma.

You won’t be sorry you made the short trip, but hurry while the canopy is still full and 1,500 years of nature hasn’t been ruined by man’s reckless abandon.

Composting and Recycling Leaves Little Garbage

Tuesday 24 June 2008 @ 4:33 am

Instead of spending $200 million to renew the Charleston County garbage incinerator, the Sierra Club has a better idea; how about eveybody get it in their head to do some honest recycling and cutting down on consumption & waste so we can pass this big blue marble on to the next generation? a compost pile

I have to tell you from first hand experience that it makes a huge difference. Here at home, we recycle all plastic, glass, cardboard, aluminum cans, food cans, & paper. Heck, I even pull the plastic window out of envelopes when recycling the paper. Now, you may not be that interested in recycling, but every little bit helps. It sure makes use of all those plastic storage bins I had stacked up in the corner of the garage.

And you wouldn’t believe how much recycling has cut down on our garbage. Heck, there’ve been several times when I didn’t even roll the garbage out because there was hardly anything in it, and we only eat out once every 2 weeks or so!

We compost everything too, but to be honest, with just the two of us, it’s only good for one batch of dirt per year, but it’s still the right thing to do; just make sure you wear a good mold mask!
